Against The Sky

I’m not exactly sure when I first became aware of Vashti Bunyan. It was sometime in the 2000s, after Lookaftering was released. I read a Pitchfork review of the album and after a few spins on the iTunes store, downloaded it.

I immediately liked how the understated production and her wisp of a voice contrasted with the sturdy melodies and intimate observations of nature, relationships, and daily life. I found myself playing certain tracks over and over…To my ear, Vashti has the rare gift of being able to coax an absolute earworm out of spare elements. Many of her melodies have the uncanny sense of “having always been.”

Over the years I’ve thought about doing a cover of one of her songs but never found the time. Well, I’m happy to report that I finally did.
